Year round scenery and activities make Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore a must visit for families. Along the shores of Lake Superior you will find sandstone cliffs, pristine beaches, trails for hiking and winter sports and welcoming small towns for dining and shopping.
Due to Lake Superior’s effect on temperature the climate here is temperate, with winter highs in the 20s and summer highs in the 70s. With over 10 feet of snowfall a year and trails and roads for snowshoeing, cross country skiing and snowmobiling, it is the perfect place to visit in winter. In the summer the lower temperatures and breeze from the lake provide ideal conditions for hiking.
Visit viewpoints: Whether you drive, hike, or take a boat, there are plenty of amazing views in Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. Boat tours leave from Munising and give you close up views of caves, waterfalls, rock formations and wildlife. Miner’s Rock can be seen after a short paved walked from a parking lot. Twelvemile Beach Campground allows day use at it’s beach, where you can enjoy Lake Superior. There are also a variety of waterfalls at the end of short walks.
Take a hike: There are too many amazing hikes to list them all, and the Upper Peninsula has the perfect weather for summer hikes. There are a variety of short, handicap accessible hikes, like Sand Point Marsh Trail, Munising Falls, and Miners Castle Overlook. If you are looking for something a bit longer, there are several hikes from 1 to 10 miles long. A favorite is the Chapel Basin Area, where you can hike past through forests, along streams, and past waterfalls to pristine beaches. Winter Activities: While summer is amazing, Pictured Rocks has plenty to enjoy in the winter as well. From snowshoeing to cross country skiing to snowmobiling, there is fun for everyone who loves snow.
Learn: Before you head to the Upper Peninsula be sure to learn more about the history and science of the park here https://www.nps.gov/piro/learn/index.htm You can even earn a virtual Junior Ranger badge.
This park is spread out along 42 miles of Lake Superior, with over 100 miles of trails. Visit the website and decide ahead how you want to spend the day (or days) of your visit to ensure you see and do everything you hope.
